Tradebank in action in the Bay of Plenty

Tradebank has been busy over the past few months contributing to a project in a rural Bay of Plenty community.  The focus of the project is to help the whanau who live there, get on top of their home repairs and maintenance so they can move towards warmer, drier healthier homes.

Draughty homes

Kiwi homes can be really draughty.  When the wind blows outside, so do the curtains inside!  This is how it used to be in our house, a 1960's brick house with timber joinery.  I love our timber joinery because this has a much higher thermal resistance than aluminium which means a slower transfer of temperature (put your hand on aluminium joinery on a cold day and feel how icy it is, timber won't feel so cold).  But that is another topic for another time.

Drying clothes inside

This is a kiwi norm.  The necessary inconvenience we put up with during the winter months to get our washing dry.  It doesn’t cause much harm though, does it?  Unfortunately, it does, drying our clothes inside contributes significant moisture into our home.

Why we should ventilate our homes and how to do it (right)

Kiwis are notorious for two things, over ventilating and under ventilating. Getting it ‘just right’ is an essential part of a healthy home, let's take a look at why...and how.

Let’s start with over ventilating.

When a minor improvement can make a major difference

So many homes we visit have too much humidity.  This means too much moisture in the air, which can make a home damp, and chances are, more costly to heat. We also know that mould thrives in cold, damp conditions.  This is not what we want for our whanau.

Where does all the moisture come from? There are three main areas internal moisture will come from in a home, and I'd first like to focus on the bathroom.  It’s a wet area right?  Isn’t it meant to be that way? Well yes, and no.
